First, I would like to point out that we were back to our usual six-pack crew this year as Chase was unable to join us. He was missed and hope to see him in 2017. Second, this year was not exactly our typical year in Canada. The trip started out normally until we lost a wheel on the Koebel boat trailer on the way up just south of Minong WI. At 12:30am you don’t have too many options when you lose a tire to your boat in the middle of nowhere. After getting the boat loaded onto a flatbed and dropped back off at a local boat dealer Pat and I had a few hours to reflect on how lucky we were not to lose the boat. In a matter of hours the boat dealer was able to install new lug bolts, fix the trailer, and get us back on the road. While we lost almost 8 hours of travel time on the way up we were still able to get up to the houseboat on Friday night. John and Pat drove over an hour in the pouring rain from the launch in Hudson up to the houseboat in Chamberlain Narrows. The boat was loaded to capacity(probably beyond) as it took us almost 15-20 seconds to plain out with a 175HP motor.

Did I mention it was cold and wet this week? We still caught fish but it wasn’t easy. We found several new spots this year and a couple of old spots were awesome. All the boats ran great, however the houseboat fishing was a little less productive than normal. However, on the first morning John was able to catch almost 20 walleye from the back of the houseboat.

We decided to do a little extra exploring this year and went up to Wapesi. We haven’t been up that far in a few years and it was good to try out some new spots. We caught a lot of smallmouth bass up there but the walleye were elusive.

The houseboat proved to be a little less productive compared to years past but we were still able to catch fish. A few new spots were discovered this year and we hope to keep finding a few new spots every year.

We got up to Canada this year on Friday May 23rd and ice-out was officially Saturday May 24th. It was the first time in all our years that we were unable to make it to our main fishing spots either with the small fishing boats or with the houseboat on the first day. After some scouting early on Saturday morning we were able to find a navigable path through the ice pack. By mid-morning we were parked in our usual spot and the standard fishing trip could begin.

The fishing was really good overall this year. With the late ice-out the fish weren’t in their usual spots. We did really good fishing off the back houseboat and we also caught a fair amount of fishing close to shore.

We were also sadly disappointed that flares do expire and need to be replaced every couple of years. They would have came in handy for some late night fishing...
This was a special year because we had three generations of Koebel’s that were able to come up and go fishing. We had Mike Koebel rejoining the group for the first time since 2008 and we had Chase Koebel (John’s son) coming up for his first time fishing in Canada. While Chase is no stranger to fishing it was his first time up in Canada fishing for 8-12 hours a day. The weather really good this year, the only day it rained was the day we drove the houseboat home. The Falkowski boat fished really well this year and brought in good numbers. We had no trophies this year but we had a fair amount of over-the-slot walleyes. John Koebel caught the biggest walleye at 29” using a slip bobber and minnow off the back of the house boat. This year we had some crazy action off the back of the houseboat. Because of all the fish we were catching Chase got a lot of practice catching and netting fish. This years crew was Jerry Falkowski, Andy Falkowski, Mat Falkowski, Pat Falkowski, Mike Koebel, John Koebel, Chase Koebel, and Tim Toohey.

We were able to get out this February in Marco Island Florida for some off-shore fishing fun. We took a charter with Wild Thing Charters out of Marco Island. We went out about 10 miles and marked some fish. This was our first fish we caught. This was the biggest of the day. We caught this and some grouper. We lucked out with waves only 2-3 ft with clear skies and relatively low wind.
